Project Aims
According to http://www.census.gov/genealogy/names/ , a tabulation of names from the United States 1990 Census, our surnames are still uncommon - the most common variants ranked as follows:
Clearly we form a quite rare group! The written records are filled with spelling variations and errors, which along with numerous gaps and mysteries make tracing a lineage difficult and challenging. The Surname DNA Project is an attempt to supplement and add to the existing research. We don't expect brick walls to tumble immediately (though we hope that they do and perhaps some will), but over time the information we gather will add to existing research and will help all of us. We encourage Baucoms et al from all countries to join. In these pages we present an overview of the Surname DNA Project along with current results and conclusions. If you would like to learn more about our project than is explained here, or if you have questions, we encourage you to contact us.
